Lyngen in Norway – the most beautiful ski touring

FAQ Lyngen: Here you’ll find common questions and answers about ski touring in Lyngen

When is the best time to visit Lyngen for ski touring?
March to early May is the best time to visit Lyngen. The days are long, the snowpack is more stable, and the weather is often clear – a perfect period for ski touring with magnificent views of fjords and jagged mountain peaks.

What is ski touring, and is it suitable for me?
Ski touring means ascending mountains with climbing skins under your skis and then skiing down in untouched terrain. It requires a decent level of fitness and previous off-piste skiing experience. If you're new to ski touring, we recommend our introductory course in Riksgränsen – a great way to learn the basics before heading to a more advanced destination like Lyngen. Tours vary, but daily ascents of 800–1200 vertical meters are common. If conditions and group motivation allow, we can also do multiple runs per day.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?
Yes, bringing your own gear is highly recommended – especially ski boots, which are difficult to rent. There are some rental options for skis and safety equipment in Tromsø, but availability is limited. Avalanche equipment (transceiver, probe, and shovel) can be borrowed from us if you don’t have your own. A complete equipment list will be provided before your trip.

Is avalanche danger a concern in Lyngen?
Yes, avalanches can occur in the area. That’s why all our tours are led by certified IFMGA mountain guides with extensive local knowledge. Your guide will assess avalanche and weather conditions daily and choose routes accordingly. Lyngen offers both steep and more mellow mountains, making it possible to adapt tours based on the current safety situation. In the case of extreme avalanche danger or severe weather, we may cancel the tour and arrange an alternative activity.

Do I need to book a guide?
It’s not mandatory, but strongly recommended unless you're very experienced and familiar with the area. Our guides have local insight, monitor weather and avalanche conditions, and help ensure both your safety and the best possible skiing experience.

How do I get to Lyngen?
Tromsø is the nearest airport and the main gateway to Lyngen. From there, it’s about a 2–3 hour drive depending on where in the region you're staying. Many of our trips include transfer from Tromsø.

What’s the weather like in Lyngen during spring?
Spring weather in Lyngen can be fantastic, but it can also change quickly – from bright sunshine to snowfall and strong winds. Always be prepared with proper clothing and protective gear, including ski goggles and warm extra layers. A complete packing list will be provided upon booking.

How many tours are included in a week?
We typically do 5–6 day tours per week, depending on group level, weather, and snow conditions. A rest day mid-week is possible for those who want one.

Is there mobile coverage and internet access in the area?
Yes, most villages in Lyngen have good mobile coverage and accommodations usually offer Wi-Fi. However, coverage can be limited in the mountains – so expect to be offline during the tours.
